Parenting
Albemarle Smart Start Partnership offers a number of programs to support families raising young children. Below are some programs offered by Smart Start to help with the job of parenting.
Parents as Teachers
Parents as Teachers is a free, in-home program for expectant mothers and parents of children under age 5. The program is offered in Camden, Currituck, Gates and Pasquotank counties through Albemarle Smart Start Partnership. Parents as Teachers is also offered to the Knotts Island Community through the Currituck County Schools.
Families who enroll in the program receive personal visits from a trained parent educator who can share information about child development and teach parents how to take advantage of specific ‘windows of opportunity,’ to enhance their child’s physical, emotional, intellectual and social development.
The visits include an activity for the parent and child to do together, along with suggestions for other activities and learning experiences. Visits from a parent educator can be scheduled for once or twice a month, depending on the family’s needs.
The program includes free screenings for health and wellness, vision, hearing and normal development using “Ages and Stages.”
